Sister Mary Madonna Ashton, CSJ honored

Sister Mary Madonna Ashton, CSJ has been named a 2016 National Women’s History Month Honoree. The 2016 theme established by the National Women’s History Project is “Working to Form a More Perfect Union: Honoring Women in Public Service and Government.”

“Sister Mary Madonna, at age 92, is oldest living recipient to be honored and only the second woman religious (Sister Aloysius Molloy, OSF, honored in 2007) to be honored since the project began in 1980” explained Molly Murphy MacGregor of the Women’s History Project (NWHP). NWHP is a clearinghouse providing information and training in multicultural women’s history for educators, community organizations, parents or anyone seeking to expand their understanding of women’s contributions to U. S. history.

While Mary Madonna has been invited to receive her award in Washington, D.C. , the event falls on the Feast of St. Joseph. “We’ll have to see,” said Mary Madonna of the D.C. invitation, “and I love being with my community on our Feast Day.”

‘Bonding’ will be one of the most important debates at the Minnesota Legislature this year. So how does the process actually work?

Gov. Mark Dayton made history last week when he proposed a $1.4 billion bonding bill for clean water, college campuses and other public construction projects across the state.

It’s the largest single bonding bill ever proposed in Minnesota, setting the bar high for the biennial debate about how much money lawmakers should borrow in order to tackle a backlog of infrastructure needs across the state.  Read more.

Health Care Financing Task Force is an opportunity for Minnesota to move toward health care for all

The newly-minted Health Care Task Force has an opportunity to outline a path where no Minnesotan has to forgo medical care because they can’t afford a visit to the doctor. We encourage the group to craft recommendations strengthening the public health insurance channels that allow more than one million Minnesotans to access health care. This work should be done with an eye towards the fact that the people likely to be most affected by efforts to strengthen or weaken public health insurance options will be those Minnesotans that struggle the most to afford private insurance. This includes a disproportionate share of women, adults with disabilities and people of color. (more…)
