Annual Membership Meeting – October 23rd

The Catholic Health Association of Minnesota will host its Annual Membership Meeting on Wednesday, October 23rd from 10:00am – 3:00pm at the Carondelet Center in St. Paul.

Lead presenters will include Mary Hill, Executive Vice President of Mission, with Avera Health, Sioux Falls presenting on two important topics:  Exploring Catholic Health Care Ethics and Moral Distress – in addition to Maureen L. Condic, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Neurobiology and Anatomy with the University of Utah School of Medicine presenting on Neurobiological Issues Surrounding Declaration of Death.

Pope Francis on Euthanasia

Euthanasia is a way of treating the human person as an object; while it may appear to give freedom, it is really a rejection of hope, Pope Francis told an oncology association Sept. 2.  “The practice of euthanasia, which has already been legalized in several countries, only apparently aims to encourage personal freedom,” he said Sept. 2.  “In reality,” he continued, “it is based on a utilitarian view of the person, who becomes useless or can be equated to a cost, if from the medical point of view, he has no hope of improvement or can no longer avoid pain.” (more…)

What Got Done: A Summary of the 2019 Legislative Session

Following more than five months and one overtime special session, the 2019 Minnesota Legislature completed its work early Saturday, May 25.  After leaders reached a bipartisan agreement with Gov. Tim Walz, a Democrat, lawmakers in the divided Capitol — Democrats hold the House and Republicans hold the Senate — voted through thousands of pages of legislation following an all-night special session. Catholics at the Capitol – February 19th

The Minnesota Catholic Conference, together with the six dioceses, will host a gathering of potentially 2,000+ Minnesota Catholics on February 19, 2019 for a day of prayer, inspiration, education, and advocacy.  The program at the River Centre in St. Paul will include presentations by actor Jim Caviezel, Archbishop Charles Chaput and Gloria Purvis, along with music from Danielle Rose. Minnesota’s January economic update shows reason for caution

The recently released  January Revenue and Economic Update gave us unsettling news about the state’s economic and budget landscape. The quarterly report from Minnesota Management and Budget (MMB) shows that recent state revenues have come in lower than anticipated. It also reports that the national economy is expected to continue to grow, but that growth will become quite slow. These two factors could be a potential warning that the $1.5 billion state budget surplus projected in the November Forecast may be too optimistic.
